The action "Upgrade of WWTPs for the management of increased demands and the reduction of the operational cost" of the Cooperation Program INTERREG V-A Greece - Cyprus 2014-2020 with MIS code 5050701 is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and national resources of Greece and Cyprus.
The project aims to upgrade two overloaded extended aeration Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs), through the use of innovative technologies, allowing increased input load to be accepted by the WWTPs, while also reducing energy and operating costs in general. These are the WWTPs of Marpissa, Paros and Kyperounda, Limassol. Both WWTPs are operating at or near their permitted capacities, while the expansion of the sewerage network is planned, and thus increase of the incoming hydraulic flow and BOD5 load.
Upon completion of the project, each WWTP will be able to process increased input loads. The produced biosolids (sewage sludge) with solids content up to at least 30% are ideal for the production of fertilizer or energy utilization At the same time, the project will upgrade the environment, both due to the qualitative upgrade of the processed effluents, and due to the reclaimed water reuse.
